One Book Colorado - a Book for Every Four Year Old

Simply stop by Council Tree, Old Town, or Harmony libraries to pick up a free book for each 4 year old in your life between October 13-25. Pick up a book and other literacy tips for your early reader! Available in both English and Spanish.

One Book Colorado is a statewide collaboration among Serve Colorado, the Colorado State Library, the Colorado Department of Education, the Denver Preschool Program, Denver7, Mile High United Way, public and military libraries statewide, the private sector, and the nonprofit and foundation communities. This annual effort puts 75,000 books of the same title to each 4 year old in Colorado. Voting on 3 titles occurs until the winner is announced and this year that will be October 13th.

En la actualidad, las ofrendas familiares o altares a los difuntos, son considerados una parte intrínseca de la tradición del Día de Muertos, que representa la fusión de dos cosmovisiones: la mesoamericana y la europea. Dicha tradición está protegida por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial.

Acompáñanos a esta presentación en español por la arqueóloga y antropóloga Guadalupe Zetina Gutiérrez, quien nos explicará el origen y significado de estos altares.

Nowadays, the family altars to the deceased are considered an intrinsic part of the tradition of the Day of the Dead, which represents the fusion of two worldviews: Mesoamerican and European. This tradition is protected by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Join this Spanish presentation by Archaeologist and Anthropologist, Guadalupe Zetina Gutiérrez, who will explain the origin and meaning of the altars.

Council Tree Storytime on a Blanket

Space is limited to 25 people and registration is required for each individual. This 20-30 minute outdoor storytime is designed for kids birth to 6 years old.  Bring your own blanket to sit on with the kids, dress for the weather, and bring your water bottles.  Social distancing and safety guidelines will be enforced including face masks for participants ages 2 and older.  

We are excited to be partnering with CSU's Environmental Learning Center (ELC) for this special storytime! The  physical location is 2400 S. Colorado Road Nine, near Ziegler and Drake.

Prepara pan de muerto para tu ofrenda / Bake Pan de Muerto for your Altar

Join us on the Day of the Dead celebration with renowned Mexican baker, Eliceo Lara, who will teach you how to prepare the typical bread of the dead: pan de muerto.

Participants must provide their own ingredients and tools, and have access to an oven.

INGREDIENTES:

MASA

·         10 g (3 cucharaditas) de levadura instantánea

·         500 g (4 tazas) de harina de trigo (bread flour)

·         200 g (1/2 taza + 6 cucharadas) de leche entera o la leche vegetal sin azúcar de tu preferencia

·         2 huevos grandes (puedes sustituirlos por 1/3 taza de puré de manzana o el sustituto de huevo de tu preferencia)

·         6 g (1 + 1/4 cucharadita) de sal de mesa

·         100 gr (7 cucharadas) de azúcar

·         100 g (7 cucharadas) de mantequilla o mantequilla vegana

·         6 g (1 + ½ cucharaditas) de extracto de vainilla o flor de azahar

·         Ralladura de 1 naranja o mandarina

BRILLO DE HUEVO

·         1 huevo

·         Una pizca pequeña de sal

·         Una pizca grande de azúcar

Opción vegana

·         2 cucharadas de miel de maple o miel de maíz

·         2 cucharadas de leche vegetal sin endulzar

·         1 pizca de sal

TERMINADO

·         65 g (1/3 de taza) de azúcar

·         55 g (1/4 de taza) de mantequilla o mantequilla vegana



Yield 8 pieces.

TOOLS:

·         2 baking sheets

·         Parchment paper (or silicon baking mats)

·         Bench scraper (if not available, a big sharp knife can be used)

·         Pastry brush

·         Kitchen blender or small food processor

INGREDIENTS:

DOUGH

·         10 g (3 teaspoons) instant yeast

·         500 g (4 cups) bread flour

·         200 g (1/2 cup + 6 tablespoons) whole milk or your vegan unsweetened milk of choice

·         2 large eggs (can be substitute for 1/3 cup applesauce or your egg replacer of choice)

·         6 g (1+1/4 teaspoon) table salt

·         100 g (1/2 cup) sugar

·         100 g (7 tablespoons) butter or vegan butter

·         6 g (1 + ½ teaspoons) vanilla extract or orange blossom water

·         Zest from 1 orange or mandarine

EGG WASH

·         1 egg

·         Small pinch of salt

·         Big pinch of sugar

Vegan option

·         2 tablespoons maple syrup or corn syrup

·         2 tablespoons unsweetened vegan milk

·         Pinch of salt

FINISHING

·         65 g (1/3 cup) sugar

·         55 g (1/4 cup) butter or vegan butter

Question, Persuade, Refer: Suicide Prevention Training

Question, Persuade, Refer are the three steps the Alliance for Suicide Prevention of Larimer County recommends taking to help someone who is struggling or may be considering suicide. QPR is the most widely taught suicide prevention gatekeeper training in the world. Participants will learn: How to ask if someone is considering suicide, how to connect someone with resources, the common warning signs of suicidal behavior, and how to help yourself or someone else in a suicidal crisis. Participants will additionally receive a three-year certification for completing the one hour training. 

Presented by the Alliance for Suicide Prevention of Larimer County. For teens and young adults ages 16-25. Registration is required to receive a link for the Zoom webinar. As a safety precaution, participants will be asked to have their cameras on during the training.

The National Novel Writing Month kicks off in November. Are you ready to pound out some pages? This virtual workshop, led by award-winning writer and educator Kristin Owens, is geared toward writers who’ve always wanted to write a novel, but just don't know where to start. You’re not alone! She’ll cover: setting expectations, understanding basic story frameworks (characters, setting and genre), and how to maintain motivation. Participants will leave with a personalized game plan and by November 30th, have 50,000 words of a first draft!

Teen Take and Make: Friendship Bracelets
