Africa's Titanic: the Story of the MV Joola Wreck

UNC Professor Karen Barton will present her work around the MV Joola, a Senegalese ferry which capsized in a storm off the coast of The Gambia and killed more than 1,800 people. She will lead you through he research on the tragedy and the humanitarian disaster that followed, and highlight how the Sufi tenet of optimism (rafet njort) inspired Senegal’s call for justice. Barton's work has taken her around the world studying humanitarian disasters, sustainability, and community resilience in the wake of environmental change.

This online program will be offered through Zoom and the link invite will be provided by email to registered participants ahead of the event. The presentation will be recorded and made available through the library's YouTube page following the event.


Funding for Barton's new book "Africa's Joola Shipwreck" (Rowman and Littlefield 2020) was provided by both Fulbright and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships.
